The Importance Of Milestone Photography

Happy tears…I guess. Today is a day that I’ve been dreading for months now. Not because I hate milestones, but I guess it because I thought this stage would last longer.

Don’t get me wrong! I definitely don’t miss explosive poo pampers, or inconsolable crying. I do know that I kind of just want my tiny, little baby back. ( Insert crying emoji)

I wanted to remember everything about her first year! The length of her eyelashes and gorgeous brown eyes to her adorable, gummy smile.

Can you relate? I’ve been looking froward to designing a 1st birthday shoot for my delicate diva but, maybe I was in denial that the time for that session would actually come.

One thing I am extremely grateful for is having documented my baby’s first year! I’ll share some milestone ages and stages that are definitely worth documenting! Cheers to having a full on toddler!

Newborn Lifestyle Session

Unlike most stylized portraiture, lifestyle photography allows a bit more time to capture the newborn stage. Parent have until around 1 month to have the session done, where as posed photography would be very difficult with a 14+ day baby. Lifestyle newborn sessions also allow older siblings to be in an environment where they are most comfortable, which always makes for a happy mommy.

My baby was a tiny, sweet, little thing. I’ll never forget her tiny, high pitched cry!

4-6 Months Milestone Session

There’s a lot to debate on when the next photo session should take place. This is largely going to vary based on factors like development, parental and photographer preference. Emery, was 5 month old in the following photos and she had reached many developmental milestones. She smiled, sat unassisted, had great eye contact and was refining her motor skills.

9 Month Milestone

By this time your baby is usually cruising around exploring their environment. I loved all of the details that can be captured at this stage. Finger foods, high chair time and pet interaction are just a few elements featured with Emery!

This was an impromptu shoot that documents everyday life with a cruising baby. She keeps me on my toes!

1 Year Milestone

I have a cake smash session planned for Emery but, I understand that it doesn’t fit everyone’s needs or style. I’m very flexible with parents in planning the milestone sessions. You may choose to celebrate the 1 year milestone with a cake smash or a session on location, whether baby is walking or not.
